Lt Gen SK Saini, AVSM, YSM, VSM GOC-in-C, Southern Command

Lt Gen SK Saini is an alumni of Sainik School Kapurthala and National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. He was commissioned into 7 JAT in June 1981. He has commanded his Battalion, a Mountain Brigade, a Counter Insurgency Force in J&K and a Corps in the Western Theatre.

His staff experience includes tenanting the appointments of Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade, GSO1 (Operations) of an Infantry Division and Director Military Operations at the Army Headquarters. He has also been BGS of a Corps deployed in J&K, DDG in the Perspective Planning Directorate and COAS Secretariat. Besides, he has been a weapons instructor in the National Security Guards Training Centre, Senior Directing Staff at the National Defence College, New Delhi and Commandant of the Indian Military Academy. Prior to taking over the present appointment the officer was the Director General (Manpower & Personnel Services). The General Officer is a graduate of the Army Command and Staff Course at the Staff College, Camberley in UK and has studied at the Royal College of Military Science, Shrivenham, UK. He is also a graduate of the Higher Command Course and the National Defence College, Bangladesh, where he authored the best research paper. The Officer has also served as the Deputy Chief Military Personnel Officer in the UN Mission in Iraq and Kuwait, attended an exercise on peacekeeping conducted by the Global Peace Operations Initiative in Mongolia and a counter terrorism exercise in Australia.

He is an avid reader and holds three Masters Degrees in Defence and Strategic Studies. He has also authored / presented many articles at national / international level. He is presently the Colonel of the JAT Regiment.

The General Officer is married toMrsNeena Saini. MrsNeena Saini is a graduate from Delhi University and presently the Regional President AWWA, Southern Command.

Lt Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM GOC-in-C, Eastern Command

Lt Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM took over as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command on 01 October 2018

Lieutenant General Manoj Mukund Naravane is a highly decorated and accomplished professional. The General was commissioned into the 7th Battalion The Sikh Light Infantry in June 1980. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy. In his 37 years of illustrious service, the General has tenated numerous Command and Staff appointments in peace, field and highly active counter insurgency environments, in the North East, Jammu & Kashmir and as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka. The General has commanded a Rashtriya Rifles Battalion in Jammu & Kashmir and an Infantry Brigade on the Eastern Front. He has also been the Inspector General, Assam Rifles (North) at Nagaland, commanded a prestigious Strike Corps of the Indian Army and was the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army Training Command before taking up his current assignment. The General has served as an instructor at the Army War College, Mhow and has also been the Indian Defence attache to Myanmar. The General holds a Masters Degree in Defence Studies from Chennai University, a M.Phil in Defence and Management Studies from DAVV, Indore and is presently pursuing his Ph.D. from Punjabi University, Patiala.

The Army Commander is married to Mrs Veena Naravane who has vast experience of more than 27 years in the field of teaching in India and abroad. She has been closely associated with welfare activities and has now assumed the responsibility of the Regional President, Army Wives Welfare Association of the Eastern Command. They are blessed with two daughters. The elder daughter Isha, is a graduate of Venkateshwara College, Delhi University and an alumnus of Trinity Laban Conservatory of Dance, London. She is currently teaching International Baccalaureate Dance at Pathways School, Gurgaon and is married to Mr Simon Massey, also a performing artist. The younger daughter Amala, is a graduate of Singapore Management University and is currently working as a PR Consultant in Singapore.


Lt Gen Abhay Krishna, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, GOC-in-C, Central Command

Lt Gen Abhay Krishna, Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal is a highly decorated, professionally proficient, competent and accomplished General Officer.

A Graduate of the 56th course at the National Defence Academy and 66th course at Indian Military Academy, the Gen Offr was commissioned into the Rajputana Rifles on 07 Jun 1980. He is an alumni of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Higher Command Course, Mhow and National Defence College, New Delhi.

He has the rare experience of Commanding a Rashtriya Rifles Battalion both in North East in OP HIFAZAT, while in Manipur and in Kashmir Valley in OP RAKSHAK in Kupwara during the Kargil conflict. He has also commanded an Infantry Battalion in High Altitude Area. He has spear headed a Brigade in a mechanised environment as part of strike formation in the deserts. The Offr commanded 27 Mountain Division and later 3 Corps in the North East. Prior to assuming the Comd of Central Army on 01 Oct 2018, the Gen offr was commanding Eastern Army and before that he was Army Commander South Western Comd.

He has held several coveted staff appointments in field as well with peace formations including Aide-de-Camp to a General Officer Commanding, tenure at Military Secretary Branch in Army Headquarters, General Staff Operations appointments both at Division and Corps Level and op lgs appt at Comd level. The Gen offr has also been at the helm of both Sub Area and Area.

During his 38 years of distinguished Army Career, he has had varied experience of serving in Mechanised and Infantry formations both in Deserts of Rajasthan and in plains of Punjab as part of strike formations. He has served with both Infantry and Mountain formations in High Altitude Area in J&K, Sikkim and Jungles of North East.

Lt Gen Abhay Krishna has been an ambassador of Indian Army in various UN Missions. He has been a Military Observer in UN peace keeping force in Mozambique (UNUMOZ) and Rawanda (UNAMIR). He also has the distinction of donning the appointment of Chief of Staff of UN Force at Burundi (ONUB).

In recognition of his gallant act during UN peace keeping mission in Mozambique, (ONUMOZ), he was awarded with Sena Medal, Gallantry. He is the recipient of Vishisht Seva Medal while being in command of Rashtriya Rifles Battalion, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal as General Officer Commanding of a Mountain Division and Uttam Yudh Seva Medal as General Officer Commanding of a Corps and Param Vishisht Sewa Medal as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of South Western Command. In addition, he has also been conferred twice with COAS Commendation Card and once with GOC-in-C Commendation Card.

During his long and illustrious career alongwith his professional courses, he has obtained various degrees from reputed Indian Universities and Institutions viz, M.Sc from MADRAS University, two M.Phil degrees from Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Indore and MADRAS University respectively, Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology from C-DAC, Pune and Post Graduate Diploma in Human Rights, International Humanitarian and Refugee Laws from Indian Academy of International Law and Diplomacy, New Delhi.

The offr brings with him enormous experience of serving in challenging areas. He has varied experience of serving in North East, Kashmir as well as the deserts. The Gen offr has a multifaceted persona, is well read and has a nuanced apch to dealing with challenges.

Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, AVSM**, YSM, SM GOC-in-C, Northern Command

Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh, AVSM**, YSM, SM took over as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Command.

He was Commissioned in 9th Battalion the Dogra Regiment. An alumni of Sainik School, Kapurthala and a graduate of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, he has done his M Sc from Defence Services Staff College, Wellington; M Phil in Defence and Management Studies from Army War College, Mhow; M Phil in Defence and Strategic Studies from National Defence College, New Delhi, MA from Kings College London while he was attending the prestigious Royal College of Defence Studies course in United Kingdom. The General has held varied Command, Instructional and Staff appointments.



Lt Gen PC Thimmaya, PVSM, VSM GOC-in-C, ARTRAC

Lt Gen PC Thimmaya, PVSM, VSM was born on 04 Apr 1960 at Coorg (Karnataka). The Gen Offr is an alumni of Sainik School, Bhubaneswar and National Defence Academy. He was awarded the Sword of Honour at Indian Military Academy and was Commissioned to 5th Bn the Mechanised Infantry Regiment (14 KUMAON) on 13 Jun 1981.

The Gen Offr commanded a Mech Coy in HAA in J&K and his Bn in the Western Theatre both as part of defensive and offensive fmns. The Gen Offr assumed command of an Independent Mechanised Brigade in the deserts in the Southern Theatre and Commanded a Sub Area in the Western Theatre. As a Maj Gen he Commanded a STRIKE RAPID in the South Western Theatre. Subsequently on promotion he Commanded the prestigious 10 Corps and tenated the appt of Comdt Army War College Mhow.

The Gen Offr has attended various prestigious courses apart from doing the mandatory basic courses to include the DSSC, Senior Command, Long Defence Management Course and a course on BMP-2 in erstwhile USSR.

The Gen Offr has been awarded with GOC-in-C Western Command Commendation while serving with 5th Bn the MECH INF Regt and GOC-in-C Eastern Command Commendation while serving with HQ IGAR (S). He was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal during the comd of the Strike RAPID.

The Gen Offr has held varied and prestigious assignments such as Staff Officer to the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of the Army Staff, Brigade Major of a Mountain Brigade which was deployed for Op RHINO in Assam and Colonel General Staff of a Mountain Division and IGAR(S) which was deployed in intense Counter Insurgency Operations in Manipur. After successful command of an Inf Div, the Gen Offr was posted as MGGS of South Western Comd, He has also had a stint as a Military Observer in UN Mission (UNAVEM, Angola). The Gen Offr has had a successful tenure with the High Commission of India in Bangladesh as the Defence Attache. In Army HQs he has been the Assistant Military Secretary in the MS Branch, Director(Operations and Planning) in the OL Directorate and also tenated the critical appt of ADG, CAB. The Gen Offr assumed the command of Army Training Command wef 01 Nov 2018 as its 21st Army Commander.

The Gen Offr is an avid sports man and plays tennis, golf apart from tps game with high degree of proficiency.

Lt Gen Cherish Mathson, PVSM, SM, VSM GOC-in-C, South Western Command

Lieutenant General Cherish Mathson, PVSM, SM, VSM assumed the appointment of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, South Western Command on 01 Aug 2017.

Lieutenant General Cherish Mathson, is an alumnus of Sainik School, Trivandrum. He was commissioned into THE GARHWAL RIFLES in June1980. He is a graduate from the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and has attended all important career courses which include Senior Command Course at Army War College, Mhow and Defence Management Course at Secunderabad. He has also attended prestigious National Defence College Course at New Delhi and in the Republic of South Africa.

The General Officer has considerable experience in varied operational assignments across India and in Somalia (UN Charter VII Operations). He has fought in rural and urban insurgency as well as terrorism situations. He has commanded his Battalion on the Line of Control with Pakistan, in Jammu and Kashmir, during Operation Parakram. He has served two tenures on Siachen Glacier, the World’s Highest Battlefield. He has commanded the Trivandrum Brigade, which he transformed to an Amphibious Role. Later he commanded the Bison Division in Hyderabad as part of the Strike Corps. He has also headed the Special Frontier Force (Airborne), which is operationally deployed on the Eastern & Northern borders of India against China. Later he went on to command the Sudarshan Chakra Strike Corps as part of the Southern Army. Significantly, his Command of formations from Brigade upwards indicates his expertise in Strike Corps operations in the Desert. The General Officer has staff experience at all levels including National Security Council Secretariat and in the Ministry of Defence.
