Background The need for training disabled soldiers was felt by Lady Marie Willingdon (wife of Lord Willingdon) after observing conditions of Indian soldiers returning from African and European theatres of World War-1. She started Queen Mary's Technical Institute (QMTI) to impart vocational training to these soldiers on 16 May 1917 in Sassoon Barracks, Bombay. Institute shifted to the present location in Khadki, Pune in 1922. QMTI is the only Institute of its kind in the Nation.

Patronship Governor of Maharashtra and the three Service Chiefs are Patron-in-Chief and Patrons respectively. GOC-in-C Southern Command, FOC-in-C Western Naval Command and AOC-in-C South Western Air Command are the Vice Patrons.

Governance QMTI is registered under Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950 as a Charitable Educational Trust (E–102). GOC Pune Sub Area is Chairman of the Trust. QMTI Logo / Illustration The logo, shown below, has a tree whose main branch got sheared. The cut branch of the tree was duly supported before its separation from the tree. The tree greened again, bore flowers and fruits. It then says:-

(Although hurt, I grow, regain my youth and give shade, foliage, flowers and fruits in service of humanity.) Same is the approach of QMTI towards the disabled soldiers.
