The past few years has seen the growth of Left Wing Extremism (LWE) wherein its tentacles have spread from the Pashupati (Nepal) to Tirupati (South). With the consolidation of the Left Wing parties and groups, their influence which earlier had been limited to Andhra Pradesh, erstwhile Madhya Pradesh and Bihar has expanded so widely that eight states have a large presence of LWE activities. The bubbles of discontent, which traditionally existed in these areas over various social and political issues, have coalesced into a major political and insurgent movement whose synergy and potency grows daily. The growth of LWE in the so called "Red Corridor", with its proximity to important cities and both north-south and east west lines of communication, is potentially dangerous. The menace is one of the biggest threat to the path of development that the Nation is and will be experiencing.
The Central Govt has taken serious measures to combat this menace. One of the important facets being the increased presence of Police personnel. Large scale development was ordered by the Central and State Governments towards capability building of the Police Forces. The State Governments, realising that the respective State Police are not geared up for such operations, approached Headquarters Central Command for imparting training to State Police in counter insurgency operations. Training in additional skills which has been desired is being imparted.

With a view to enhancing the skills of the Police Force in combating incidents of counter insurgency and the growing Naxalite menace State Governments of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Uttarakhand have sought the Central Army’s assistance in imparting specialized training to their respective State Police Forces (SPF) companies which are mainly Armed police / India Reserve (IR) battalions.

Specialised counter Naxalite training is being imparted at various Regimental Centres under Headquarters Central Command for Police personnel of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Orissa. In addition, Counter IED training is also being imparted to Police personnel. The Central Army is also presently conducting specialized training for Armourers and Nursing Assistants of these states.
