Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL)

Genesis

KYKL is a conglomeration of splinter groups of various valley insurgent groups. It was formed during the month of January 1994 under the chairmanship of Kangleipok Communist Party splinter group leader Ibopishak Singh. The group consisted of dissidents of United National Liberation Front (Oken) and People Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Khomba). The group had arrived at a good understanding with UKLF and NSCN(IM) who gave them weapons/ammunitions and financial support. However in May 1995 Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup split with Mr Oken as the leader of one group and claimed itself as the real Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup. NSCN(IM) had recognized the Oken group and extended support to it in the valley and used it to check United National Liberation Front, which has openly criticized NSCN(IM) for demanding Greater Nagaland. Both factions of Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup suffered severe set backs in 1996-97.

In February 2002 the two factions merged into one single unit and Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (O) broke away from NSCN (IM). Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup sustained a severe set back in February 2003 after many of their cadres were killed by troops of Assam Rifles. Presently it is active in Imphal and valley districts.

Organization and Leaders

The group is organized into Civil Wing referred as Executive Committee and Armed Wing referred as Miyamgi Yawol Lanmee (MYF). Executive Committee is headed by Chairman Achou Toijamba with General Secretary Itoyai Singh. Armed wing is headed by Self Style Chief-in-Command (C-in-C), N Loken Singh. Its Armed wing is divided into two fighting groups.

Objective

Like other Meitei groups it also professes cessation from India as its ultimate objective. However it lays greater emphasis on creating a just and fair Meitei society free of modern day evils. The group has been devoting considerable energy in projecting an image of ‘Saviour of Society’ by targeting educational institutions and evils of society as perceived by it.

Affiliations

The group has been traditionally aligned to NSCN(IM) and has been getting considerable support from it in the training of its cadre and weapons procurement and safe heavens. However the traditional alignment has been on wane due to the demand of NAGALIM by NSCN(IM) supporting which goes against its own ethos. At present the group enjoys close nexus with United National Liberation Front which has also helped it in arms and Ammunition procurement. The group is perceived very close to the present State Govt.

Present Status

Operation New Kangleipak (ONK) was launched by the group for cleansing Education Department. Enforcement of dress code for girl students/ lady teachers and cleansing Meitei society are some of favourite issues undertaken by the group. It has been strongly involved in social reforms and abduction of Government officials especially targeting Education department officials for alleged involvement in corruption.
